Summer AC Maintenance Checklist for Illinois Homeowners — 2026
It's mid-May in Illinois — summer is right around the corner. Before temperatures climb into the 90s, take 30 minutes to run through this checklist. The DIY tasks are things any homeowner can do. The professional tasks are what Best Heating & Cooling covers in our $89 summer tune-up.
Part 1: DIY Tasks — Do These Yourself This Weekend
These tasks require no special tools or training. Set aside 30–45 minutes and work through the list. Check each one off as you go.
Part 2: Professional Tasks — What Our $89 Tune-Up Covers
These tasks require EPA certification, specialized tools, or access to components that should only be handled by a trained technician. This is exactly what Best Heating & Cooling covers in every tune-up visit.
Warning Signs to Watch For When You Test Your AC
When you run through the DIY checklist, pay attention to these warning signs that indicate a professional inspection is needed:
- ⚠Warm or lukewarm air blowing from vents (possible low refrigerant or compressor issue)
- ⚠Weak airflow from vents (clogged filter, blocked ductwork, or blower motor issue)
- ⚠Grinding, squealing, or banging noises when the system runs
- ⚠Ice forming on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil
- ⚠Water pooling around the indoor air handler (clogged condensate drain)
- ⚠Musty or burning smell when the AC runs
- ⚠System short-cycling — turns on and off every few minutes
- ⚠Electric bill suddenly higher than last summer with similar usage
If you notice any of these signs, call Best Heating & Cooling at (815) 605-7365. Most issues are much less expensive to fix when caught early — before they cause a full system failure during a heat wave.
Is It Too Late to Get a Tune-Up in May?
Absolutely not. While the ideal time is March–April before the heat arrives, a mid-May tune-up is still extremely valuable. Illinois typically doesn't see its hottest temperatures until late June through August — so getting your system tuned up now means it will be running at peak efficiency for the entire summer.
Our $89 AC tune-up special is still available. We're currently booking appointments throughout New Lenox, Joliet, Mokena, Frankfort, Tinley Park, Orland Park, Homer Glen, Lockport, and surrounding Will County communities. Book online or call (815) 605-7365.
How Often Should You Service Your AC in Illinois?
For most Illinois homeowners, once per year is the standard recommendation — ideally in spring before the cooling season begins. If you also have a gas furnace, consider a twice-yearly service plan: AC tune-up in spring, furnace tune-up in fall. Best Heating & Cooling offers annual maintenance agreements that include both visits at a discounted rate. Ask about our service plans when you call.
